SECTION 3
Lesson 3.1: Modifying Cells and Data

You can use the formatting toolbar to perform a variety of common formatting operations quickly and easily.

The formatting toolbar makes formatting your data as easy as clicking a button.

You can easily quickly access different font types by choosing from the drop down list.

In this image, Ariel has been selected. Notice that the name of the font is presented in the font type that the name refers to, so you can get an idea of what the font looks like.

You can select a font size by choosing from the font size list.

In this example, a font size of 10 has been selected.

You can use the bold, Italics, and underline buttons to put your data in Bold, Italics, or have your data underlined. If you select combinations of these buttons you can have Combined formatting effects.

You can use these buttons to left justify, centre, or right justify your data respectively.

You can use this button to merge cells and centre the data in the newly merged cell.

These buttons provide options for formatting numerical data. You can make numbers in your worksheet currency style, percent style, or comma style. The two buttons on the right allow you to increase or decrease the number of places after the decimal.

This graphic shows the effects of currency style, percent style, and comma style on data.

These buttons adjust the indent (distance from the cell walls) of data within cells. The left button decreases the indent, and the right button increases it.

With these buttons, you can access dropdown lists that provide options for putting borders around cell selections, filling in background colour (bucket), and changing the font colour.

The downward pointing triangle at the extreme right of the formatting toolbar, gives you access to options to customize the content and location of the toolbar.

Basically, you can use all the tool bar buttons in the came way. First, select a cell or range of cells to be formatted, and then click the buttons on the formatting toolbar to activate or deactivate the formatting as you see fit.
