SECTION 3
Lesson 3.3 Enhancing a Worksheet’s Appearance

A Style is a set of formats that can be given a name, saved, and applied to a cell or a range of cells. You can create a style, or modify an existing style to build the formatting options you need for your worksheets.

To create a style, enter some data in a cell and apply the formats you want to include in the new style.

Here, we have entered 1234, and selected bold, underline, centre alignment, and a red font colour from the formatting toolbar.

Next, Choose Format->Style from the menu bar to display the style dialogue box.

Enter a name for the style, and click Add to save it. Now the style will be included in the Style Name list box. You can delete or modify a style by selecting it from the Style name list box and clicking the Delete or Modify buttons.

Clicking the Modify button will display the Format Cells dialogue box. You can choose from the tabs and options in this box to modify the style.

Styles are saved with the workbook they are created in. If you want to use a style from another workbook, the Merge button will allow you to bring in the styles you need. To do this, you must have two workbooks open. Activate the workbook you want to bring styles to, and click the Merge button in the Style dialogue box.

In the Merge Styles box select the workbook with the style you want and click the OK button. Excel will copy all of the styles from the workbook you selected into the workbook you want to bring styles to. You will be asked if you want to merge styles any time there are styles in both workbooks have matching names.

To use a style, select a cell or range of cells and choose Format->Style from the menu bar.

When you see the Style dialogue box, choose a style from the Style name: list, modify it by clearing or checking options in the Style Includes area, and click OK. The style will now be applied to the selected cells.
