SECTION 3
Lesson 3.4 Modifying Excel’s Toolbars

In this exercise you will create a custom toolbar, and hide it from view.

1.

Start Excel and select View ->Tools->Customize from the Menu bar. This will invoke the Customize
dialogue box.

Make sure the Toolbars tab is selected, and click the
New button.

This will display a box that you can use to name your
new toolbar.

2.

Type the name FileBar into the name field and click OK.

This will display a blank toolbar named Filebar.

3.

Click on the Commands tab on the Customize dialogue box and choose File from the categories list.

Click on the New icon in the Commands list,

Hold your left mouse button down and drag the icon to
your new tool bar.

You should now see the open button available on your new toolbar.

In a similar manner, drag the Open, Close, Save, and Save As commands to your new toolbar.

You now have a custom toolbar, named FileBar, for file management. You can move and dock this new
toolbar just like any other.

4.

To hide your new toolbar, click the Toolbars tab on the Customize dialogue box.

Scroll down the toolbars list, until you see the name your new toolbar. Clear the check mark beside it, and
click Close.

Your custom toolbar is now hidden. Every time you open Excel, your toolbar will be available. If it is hidden,
you will have to display it to use it.

5.

To display your new hidden toolbar, choose View-> Toolbars from the file menu.

You will see the name of your new toolbar at the bottom of the menu list. Click just to the left of the name to
place a checkmark and make it visible. Clear the check mark to hide it again.
