SECTION 3
Lesson 3.5: Working with Charts

To create a chart in Excel, open a workbook that contains some data, and click on the chart button on the standard toolbar.

Or choose Insert->Chart from the menu bar. This will display the Chart Wizard dialogue box.

You can scroll down the Chart type list, and click on a list entry to view images of the Chart sub-types available.

If you select a range of data for the chart before you invoke the chart wizard, you can click and hold the Press and hold to View Sample button to see what the chart would look like based on the data.

You can select an entire block of data by clicking on a cell in the data block before you start the chart wizard, or you can select a range of data by dragging your mouse pointer.

Once you have decided on a chart type, click the next button to display step two of the chart wizard dialogue.

Notice the Data range field in step two of the chart wizard dialogue. If the data in the Data range field is not the data you want to chart, you can choose your data by selecting it from the worksheet.

Once you select your data, you will see your selection entered into the Data range field, and you can see a preview of what your chart will look like.

You can click the Finish button now to create a basic chart, leaving out steps three and four, or you can click the Next button to continue with the chart wizard.

If you click Finish you will not get to choose where your chart will be located (current sheet or a new sheet).

In step three of the chart wizard, there are a number of option tabs you can choose from to modify your chart. These include Axes, Gridlines, Legend, Data Labels, and data Table. You will learn more about modifying these chart components in the lessons that follow.

Clicking the next button will take you to the final step in the chart wizard dialogue.

Step four of the dialogue lets you choose where to place your chart.

You can place it in a new worksheet, or in same worksheet that contains the source data. Click the Finish button to create your chart.
