SECTION 1
Lesson 1.2: The Photoshop CS Screen Components

In this practice exercise, you will explore the Photoshop CS workspace (screen). You will navigate through menus, explore palettes, and examine the Photoshop toolbox.

1.

First, locate the Photoshop CS icon on your desk top.

Double click the icon with your left mouse button to start Photoshop CS.

2.

When you get to the Photoshop screen, click on the heading File at the left of the menu bar.

Notice that there are keyboard shortcuts listed next to some of the menu options.

Now, let your mouse pointer hover over one of the menu items that is followed by a right pointing arrow. A sub menu should appear.

3.

Slide your mouse pointer along the menu bar, revealing each menu as you go. When you display the Window menu, observe the items that have checkmarks next to them.

If the toolbox and options bar are visible on your screen, the menu items Tools and Options will have checks by them. If they were not checked, these screen components would be hidden from view.

4.

Next, move your mouse pointer to the group of palettes that contain the colour, swatches, and styles tabs.

On the colour palette, drag the slider switches back and forth and observe how the colour on the top preview square changes. Now click on the white square with one corner hidden, and move the sliders.

Next, click the Swatches tab to expose the swatches palette.

Notice that when you move your mouse over the array of colour swatches, your mouse pointer turns into an eyedropper. If you click on a colour swatch, you will notice that the colour of the foreground square in the toolbox changes to match the colour swatch you pick.

5.

Next, move your mouse over to the Photoshop toolbox. Let your mouse pointer hover over each tool in the toolbox. You will see a small comment box appear containing the name of the tool you are currently examining.

Take note of the tools with a small black triangle in the lower right corner of the button. This indicates that there is a sub menu available. When you reach the pen tool, click on it and hold down your left mouse button. This will display the sub menu for the pen tool.

Click on the other tools that have sub menus available, and explore the tool variants.

6.

Move your mouse pointer to the menu bar, and choose File -> Browse.

This will display the Photoshop CS enhanced file browser.

7.

Notice that the file browser has a menu bar of its own, with File, Edit, Automate, Sort, and View menus available.

8.

Click the close (X) button on the file browser, and then click the close button in the upper right of the Photoshop screen to close Photoshop CS.
