SECTION 1
Lesson 1.3: File Management Basics

To save your current document under its current name, choose File->Save, or use the Ctrl + S keys. Note that if you are editing the original version of your document, this will commit any changes you have made to the saved file.

It is a simple matter to save files under a different name or format with Photoshop CS. After you have finished working with an existing image or a newly created file, choose File->Save As from the Photoshop menu bar (Shift+Ctrl+5 keyboard shortcut). This will display the save as dialog box as shown in the following image.

Now, you can use the navigation icons on the left or the Save In drop list at the top of the box, to browse to the location of your choice. When you find an appropriate place to save your work, select the file type that you want to apply to the file from the Format drop list, and click the Save button to store the file on your system.

Each specific format you choose for saving your file may have a corresponding dialog box associated with it. For example, if you save an image as a PNG file, you will see the following PNG dialog.

If you want to save a file as a TIF image, the following TIF dialog will appear.

Specifying IBM PC Byte order may help your images load faster if you work with a Windows computer.

If you save the file as a CompuServe GIF file (GIF) the following Indexed Colour Dialog will appear.

In most cases, the Photoshop default settings for these dialog boxes offer a good blend of image quality and document size. As you learn more about these file formats, experiment with the options in the dialog boxes to explore the effects they have on image quality and file size.

If you are editing a pre existing file, (retouching a digital photo for example) you can ensure that your work is saved as a copy by checking the As a Copy check box. This will prevent you from overwriting and losing the original image file even if you save the working version to the same folder.

You can also choose File -> Save for Web if you are editing images for a web page. Selecting this option will open a window with options for choosing a file type and for optimizing files for the web.
