SECTION 1
Lesson 1.4: Modifying your Photoshop Layout

Most of the screen components in Photoshop CS can be arranged on the screen as the user sees fit. By default, the Photoshop CS screen looks something like this.

You can see four palette groups on the right side of the screen, the toolbox on the left, and the options bar and menu bar at the top of the screen.

No matter how you configure your screen you can always return to the default layout by choosing Window->Workspace->Reset Palette Locations from the menu bar.

To move a palette group to a different location, just click on the thick blue bar at the top of the palette group window, hold down your left mouse button, and move the palette group window to the location of your choice.

You can also relocate an individual palette by dragging it by its name tab, and dropping it in another palette group or on the screen by itself. At the far right of the options bar, you will see a palette well.

If there are palettes that you would like to have easy access to, but that you don’t want cluttering up your screen, locate them in the palette well by dragging and dropping them in the well by their name tabs. You can easily drag palettes from the well to a palette group or to another area on the screen if you wish.

You can resize a number of palettes by dragging the lower right corner of the palette with your mouse. Not all palettes can be resized however, so look for a triangle of shaded dots in the lower right of the palette. If you see this triangle of dots, the palette can be resized with your mouse.

This palette cannot be resized (no dots in the lower right corner).

This palette can be resized, (notice the dots in the lower right corner). To resize it, drag the lower right corner with your mouse.

You can also position the Photoshop toolbox around the screen as you require by dragging it by the thick blue bar at its top. The following image shows the Photoshop screen after the screen components have been rearranged.
