SECTION 2
Lesson 2.1: Introduction to the Photoshop Toolbox

The vector graphics tools (also known as vector tools) allow you to work with and create vector graphics and paths. Vector graphics are different from standard bitmap images, and require special tools to create and modify them. Paths are drawn outlines that can be filled or stroked with colour, and used to make selections. The image at left shows the cluster of vector graphics tools available in the toolbox.

Each one of the path and graphics tools (vector tools) has variants that are accessible by clicking on and holding the given tool button. There are modification options available in the options bar for these tools as well.

The button with the arrow, in the upper left of the cluster is the path selection tool. This tool can be used to select and move existing paths and vector shapes. The button with the large T is the text button, which can be used for adding text to an image. The button in the lower left of the group (with the pen tip symbol) is for the pen tool. The pen tool is used for drawing and editing paths. The rectangle tool and its variants, located in the lower right of the cluster, can be used to create a variety of vector shapes.

(The differences between bitmap and vector graphics are discussed in detail in lesson 4.1.)
