This is the navigation or Navigator palette. If you open an image in Photoshop, you will see a smaller version of the image in the navigator palette’s viewing box.
The red border around the image can be dragged with your mouse to specify what part of the image will be viewed in Photoshop. Take a look at the following screen shot. As you can see, the red border has been dragged over the eagle’s eye in the navigator palette.
The region of the image bounded by the red box now fills the main Photoshop image canvas.
If you click on the right pointing arrow in the upper right of the navigator palette, a pop up menu of palette options will appear; this behaviour is consistent across all palettes that display the right pointing arrow. If you click the Palette Options item from this menu, you will see the following dialog box.
You can use the drop list labelled Colour: to change the colour of the (now red) viewing box.
At the bottom of the navigator palette, you will see a zoom percentage figure at lower left. You will also see a slider switch between a small pair of mountains, and a larger pair of mountains. If you move the slider closer to the large pair of mountains, the image on the main canvas will be zoomed in. If you move the slider towards the smaller mountains, the image on the main canvas will be zoomed out. In both cases, the navigator viewing box will adjust to surround the region shown in the main canvas. You can also adjust the zoom levels by clicking on the large or small mountains directly.
