First, start
Photoshop CS by clicking the
PhotoShop CS Icon on the desk top. You can also start
Photoshop by choosing

start menu. |
|
|
|
|
2. |
After you start
Photoshop CS, open the
file named Old Image.jpg in the Photoshop CS samples
folder. When you open the file you may see the following alert.

Just click the
OK button to continue. Your
Photoshop screen should look like something like the following:

|
|
|
|
3. |
To begin, select
the elliptical marquee
tool from the Photoshop toolbox.

The elliptical
marquee tool has a dashed circle icon and can be found in the
upper left of the toolbox.
After you select
the tool, place your mouse pointer a couple of centimetres to
the left of the person’s head, and
drag a narrow ellipse vertically down the image for a couple
inches. Without lifting your mouse button, drag
horizontally to the right to expand the narrow ellipse into a
circle around the person’s head.
Your selection
should look something like this.

Put your mouse
pointer inside the selection and drag
the selection so it is centered over the person’s
head. |
|
|
|
|
4. |
After you position
your selection, right click on the
image and click the Fill
option in the menu that appears.

In the resulting
dialog box, make sure that Foreground
Colour is selected in the drop list at the top of the
box, and enter 44 in the
field labelled Opacity.
Your image should now look something like the following:

In the
History palette, right click
on the history item labelled
Elliptical Marquee, just beneath the Open history
item.
Choose
Delete from the pop up menu
to clear all the changes you made to the image after opening it. |
|
|
|
|
5. |
Next, choose the
Polygonal Lasso from the tool
box.

You use the
polygonal lasso by clicking the image to create a series of
points. Photoshop will join the points with straight lines as
you create them. |
|
|
|
|
6. |

Click the image at
one of the corners of the
neck tie, and then click on the next
corner of the neck tie moving clock wise. Click all
corners of the necktie in this way until you end up at your
starting point.
When you are
finished you should see an animated
selection border around the neck tie. |
|
|
|
|
7. |
Right click on the
image and choose Fill from
the menu. Adjust the fill dialog just as before, but this time
set the opacity value to
100.

Click the
OK button in the dialog box
to fill the tie with the foreground colour. Your image should
now look like this.

Right click the
Polygonal Lasso item in the
history palette (underneath the open item), and select
Delete from the pop up menu
to delete the changes you have made to the image. |
|
|
|
|
8. |
Next, select the
Magic Wand Tool from the tool
box. (The icon looks like a magic wand).
In the options bar,
enter 40 into the
tolerance box and make sure there is a check mark in the
contiguous (meaning adjacent
pixels) check box.
Now click on the
person’s upper shoulder on the right of the image. This should
result in a selection that looks like this:

|
|
|
|
|
9. |
Now, right click on
the Magic Wand item just
below the open item in the history palette list. In the pop up
menu, click Delete. This
should clear any changes that you made to the image. |
|
|
|
|
10. |
Press
Ctrl + Q to exit Photoshop
CS. If you see the following alert, click the
No button to leave the
original image unchanged.
