SECTION 3
Lesson 3.3: Editing With Selections

In this exercise, you will practice copying and pasting a simple selection from one image to another. Remember, when editing images work from a copy, or be extremely careful not to save changes to an image unless you have a back up of the original.

1.

Start by opening Photoshop CS. (You can double click the desktop icon, or use the start menu.)

2.

When you have the Photoshop screen available, press Shift + Ctrl +O to open the file browser. If it is not displayed by default, navigate to the Photoshop CS samples folder, and double click the Palm Tree image thumbnail. Next, double click the Ranch House image thumbnail. (The thumbnails should be labelled underneath.) When you have opened the images, close the Photoshop browser.

Your screen should look something like this.

3.

Click on the title bar of the Palm Tree image to activate it, and press the Ctrl +R keys to show rulers on the top and left side. Activate the Ranch House image and press Ctrl + R to display the rulers for that image as well.

Your screen should now look something like this.

4.

Next, select the Rectangular Marquee tool from the toolbox, and using the rulers for guidance if you need to; drag a selection rectangle around the palm tree that is slightly wider than the ranch-house doorway, and a bit higher than the doorway.

5.

Next, choose Edit->Copy from the menu bar, or press the Ctrl +C keys to copy the selection.

6.

Now, activate the Ranch House image by clicking on the title bar, and use the Rectangular Marquee tool to make a selection inside the doorway as shown.

7.

You will now want to paste the copied region inside the selected area of the ranch house image. To do this, choose Edit ->Paste Into from the menu bar. Your image should look something like this.

8.

Next, use the Ctrl +R keyboard shortcut to remove the rulers from both images.

9.

Close the Palm Tree image by clicking the close (X) button in the upper right of the image canvas. If Photoshop asks you if you want to save changes to the document, click the No button.

10.

Next, choose File->Save As from the menu bar.

Name the image Practice9, and choose the Photoshop PSD format. Browse to your practice folder and click the Save button to save the image when you are ready.

11.

After you have saved the image, exit Photoshop CS with the close button, or the Ctrl +Q shortcut.
