SECTION 4
Lesson 4.2: Image Size and Resolution

Photoshop CS has an auto-resolution feature that will let you select from three different print quality levels. When you select a level, the auto feature will adjust the pixel dimensions, the document size, and the pixels per inch values according to the quality level that you select. To access the auto feature, choose Image -> Image size from the menu bar to display the Image size dialog box, and then click the Auto button on the right side of the box.

Here is the Auto Resolution dialog box.

To use auto resolution, select a quality level, (Draft, Good, or Best), and then click the OK button.

You will see the adjustments made by Auto Resolution in the Image size dialog box. Here is the Image Size dialog after setting the quality level to Draft, and clicking OK in the Auto resolution dialog.

Here is the Image Size dialog box after selecting “Best” as the quality level in the Auto resolution box.

Notice that the resolution in pixels per inch has increased, along with the pixel dimensions. Since the pixel dimensions have increased, we know that the image will be re-sampled.

If you clear the Resample Image checkbox, only the document size and pixels per inch values will be adjusted when you use Auto resolution. Clearing the resample image check box means that a high quality print may require a small document (print) size.

If you want to avoid re-sampling, and also have large high quality printed images, work with images that are scanned or captured with as much resolution (pixel information) as possible.
