The
best way to get comfortable with these tools is through using them. In
this exercise you will use the healing brush to retouch the greyscale
Ranch House image, and you will use the Patch tool to retouch the Palm
Tree image. Both of these images are available in your Photoshop samples
folder.
|
1. |
To start,
open
Photoshop CS. |
|
|
|
|
2. |
Choose
File->Browse from the menu
bar and use the file browser to open the Ranch House
image.

If you see the
dialog shown here, just click the OK
button. This is just telling you that the image contains
information that is not supported by the current workspace.
Since we will not be saving changes to the original image don’t
worry about it. |
|
|
|
|
3. |
When the image
opens in Photoshop, right click on the
document window title bar and
choose Duplicate from the
pop up menu. Name the copy Practice4 and then click the
OK button.
Close
the file browser, and position /adjust the images so they are
side by side.

|
|
|
|
|
4. |
Next, select the
Healing Brush
from the toolbox.

In the options bar,
adjust your
Brush size
to about
15-17 pixels,
and clear the
Aligned
checkbox. When the Aligned box is clear, the sample cross hairs
will return to the same spot after each click, regardless of
where you move your mouse.
Next, in the
duplicate image, find a spot in the
upper left
corner
of the door where there are no gouges or blemishes. Once you
find a clear spot, press the
Alt Key
and
click
to sample the image data.
The next step is to
place your mouse pointer (without dragging) over a
scratch
in the door. Make sure that the scratch is not to close to an
edge or a strong colour contrast. Simply click your mouse button
once to Heal the scratch. Repeat this process for as many
scratches as you can, being careful not to leave any obvious
artifacts (unwanted effects).
If you make a
mistake, delete the last healing brush item in the history
palette (this should remove your mistake). If you must, you can
always choose the clear history option from the history palette,
and start over from the beginning.

You should notice
far fewer scratches on the door on the left. |
|
|
|
|
5. |
Next,
close (X)
the original image and click File
followed by Save As
to invoke the Save As dialog. Save the duplicate image as
Practice4 in your
practice folder.
( if you are asked
what quality level to save the file at, choose
Maximum) |
|
|
|
|
6. |
The next step is to
use the File Browser (click File,
and then click Browse)
to open the Palm Tree image from your Photoshop samples
folder. Once again, make a duplicate image by right clicking the
document window title bar
and choosing Duplicate
from the pop up menu. Name your duplicate image Practice5
and don’t forget to close
your File Browser.

This is what your
Photoshop screen should look like. |
|
|
|
|
7. |
The next step is to
select the Patch tool from
the Photoshop toolbox.

When the Patch tool
is selected, click the Destination
radio button, and then drag your mouse pointer around the
cloud
in the upper left to make a selection that contains most of it.
Place your cursor inside the selection, and drag the selection
to the right a small amount, (let the selection overlap the
original cloud formation slightly). Release your mouse button
and single click your mouse to deselect the selection outline.

Notice how the
patch tool blends the patch into its surroundings. |
|
|
|
|
8. |
Next, use the patch
tool to draw a selection
around the clouds
that are just above the horizon on the right side of the tree.

Move the selection
across to the
left
and position it
above the horizon
to the left of the tree. After you do this, click the mouse to
deselect
the outline.

The cloud
formations have been retouched seamlessly with the patch tool. |
|
|
|
|
9. |
The next step is to
close
(X)
the original image, and then save the duplicate by clicking
File followed by
Save As.
In the Save As
dialog, save the duplicate
image in your Practice folder under
TIFF
format with the name Practice5. |
|
|
|
|
10. |
In the TIFF options
dialog box, change the byte order to
IBM PC
(unless you use a Mac).

Click
OK to save the image with
these settings.
When you are
finished, close (X)
Photoshop CS by clicking the close button in the upper right of
the screen. |
