SECTION 1
Lesson 1.1: Maintaining Your Computer

In this section we will discuss the various ways of installing and removing software packages. A software package is a program or group of programs, contained on media like a floppy, CD, or downloaded from the Internet. While a program can be installed and removed through the Add or Remove Programs applet, they can also be installed, modified, or removed through their installation package from the source media.

Methods of installing a software packages include:

  • Use the Add or Remove Programs feature.
  • Use the media that the software came on (floppy, CD, other).
  • Run the executable file that was downloaded from the Internet.

Most software packages these days are in the form of CDs. If a CD is inserted into your CD-ROM and you are not presented with an auto-run installation screen, you can use the Windows Add or Remove Programs feature. (You may also browse the CD contents to find the setup initialization file, but this can sometimes be confusing.)

Methods of removing software packages include:

  • Use the Add or Remove Programs feature.
  • Look for a uninstall option under the programs start menu listing.
  • Insert the program CD to check for a uninstall option in the auto-run installation screen.
