SECTION 1
Lesson 1.2: Optimizing Your Computer

Microsoft Windows Update allows you to update your windows operating system by applying the latest security and critical updates. This helps prevent your computer from the latest virus and security threats. Other optional updates can provide you with program and driver updates and tools to enhance your experience with Windows XP.

There are many methods of accessing Windows Update from many different areas of Windows, but for now let’s cover the two quickest ways. Click the Start Menu, choose All Programs, and click Windows Update. You can also open Internet Explorer, select the Tools Menu, and select Windows Update.

At the Windows Update Web site you are prompted with two options: Express or Custom.

  • Express will automatically check your computer for the latest updates and display a report of the updates you do not have installed. You do not have the option to add or remove specific updates.
  • Custom will check your computer for the latest security updates and display a report of the updates you do not have installed. Checkboxes are available to add or remove items from the list.
