SECTION 1
Lesson 1.3: Troubleshooting Your Computer

The Program Compatibility Wizard allows you to test a program in different modes or with various settings applied. This is used for older applications which were not designed for Windows XP. It also provides options for display settings (color, resolution, visual themes) and input settings.

To open the Program Compatibility Wizard, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start Button.
  2. Browse to All Programs, and the Accessories menu.
  3. Select the Program Compatibility Wizard icon.

After opening the initial window, click the Next button to continue to the next window. This window provides you with three options:

  • I want to choose from a list of programs: Selecting this option and clicking Next will allow you to choose from a list of your currently installed programs and set the desired compatibility mode and display settings.
  • I want to use the program in the CD-ROM drive: Selecting this option and clicking next will use the program on your CD and allow you to set the desired compatibility mode and display settings.
  • I want to locate the program manually: Selecting this option and clicking Next provides you with a Browse button. This allows you to manually select an executable file (exe, com, pif, cmd, bat, ink) and set the desired compatibility mode and display settings.

Once you click Next, the wizard will let you find the program and walk you through applying its settings.
