SECTION 1
Lesson 1.3: Troubleshooting Your Computer

Up to this point we have discussed Windows XP’s built-in tools and features that you can use to troubleshoot your computer. But what if your computer does not boot to the desktop? What if you apply a program or driver update, reboot, and your computer will not load Windows? What would you do?

The logical answer to this question is to try Last Known Good Configuration. In this type of situation Last Known Good Configuration allows your computer to return to the last time you successfully booted to your desktop.

To access Last Known Good Configuration, follow these steps:

  1. Remove all media from the computer (floppies, CDs).
  2. Reboot the computer and tap the F8 function key on the keyboard every second until the Advanced Options Menu appears. (Holding down F8 will also work.) You should start tapping the key before a picture is displayed on the screen.
  3. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll down to Last Known Good Configuration option. Hit Enter to select the option.
