Lesson 2.4: The Accessories Menu

   

 

Accessories Menu Programs

 

By default the accessories menu is under the Start Menu, All Programs menu. The accessories menu is filled with a selection of useful tools and programs.  By default there are four submenus which we will cover in a bit, but first let’s look at the programs listed under the main menu:

 

 

Address Book

Provides a convenient place to store contact information for easy retrieval by programs such as Microsoft Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.

Calculator

Provides a basic and scientific calculator.

Command Prompt

Previously known as MS-DOS (an acronym for Microsoft Disk Operating System). This command prompt window is a command-line interface with MS-DOS based features.

Notepad

A basic text editor you can use for simple documents or for creating web pages.

Paint

A drawing tool that you can use to create black-and-white or colour drawings.

Program Compatibility Wizard

Used to test if a program/application is compatible with Windows XP. This option is also available in Help and Support.

Scanner and Camera Wizard

Helps you manage your pictures from scanner and camera devices that are connected to your computer.

Synchronize

Will synchronize your offline items (such as an active homepage on your desktop or other active desktop items).

Tour Windows XP

Shows you a video and music tour for Windows XP. There are two options available (animated and non-animated) when the wizard starts.

Windows Explorer

Displays a hierarchical structure of files, folders, and drives on your computer. It also shows additional resources for your computer.

Windows Movie Maker

Allows you to transfer recorded video and audio from a source, such as a camcorder or digital video camera to your computer. You may also create, edit, and manage your video or audio files and post them on a Web site or send to a friend.

WordPad

Used to create or edit text files that contain formatting or graphics.
