If you’re more comfortable working with the Excel style of spreadsheets, but you need to use Word’s features, you can insert an Excel object into your document. (Remember when we looked at objects in SECTION 2?) You can do this in one of two ways:
-
Click the
Insert Excel Worksheet button ( - Click the Insert menu and choose Object. On the Create New tab, click Microsoft Excel Worksheet and click OK.
Either action will open an Excel worksheet into your screen. Your menus and toolbars will also change to reflect this choice:
Just like other types of OLE objects, you can enter your data into the Excel object (in this case, the spreadsheet) and then click outside of the object to go back to your Word document. (Of course, the spreadsheet will still appear in your document as an object.)
We’re not going to cover the additional toolbar options and the menu choices as they are all related to Excel commands. This may be a useful tool, however, if you often create complex tables and graphs inside a Word document.
