SECTION 3
Lesson 3.1: Basic Graphics Tools

You can open the Format Picture dialog in one of three ways:

-          Double-click on the photo you want to format.

-          Right-click on the photo and click Format Picture.

-          Click the Format Picture button on the picture toolbar.

Once you have performed one of those commands, the dialog box will appear.

You can see that it has five tabs. Let’s look at what each tab does.

-          Colours and Lines: Allows you to choose a fill colour and transparency level for your picture. There are also options for lines and arrows which are disabled when those objects are not in use.

-          Size: Allows you to set height, width, and rotation for your picture. You can also scale the picture using percentages. To prevent your image from looking warped or stretched, keep the Lock aspect ratio and Relative to original picture size boxes checked. You can also reset your picture to its original state by clicking the Reset button.

-          Layout: Choose a text wrapping style for your picture. If you choose In line with text, you can choose a horizontal alignment as well.

You can click the Advanced button to choose more wrapping styles, specify what side to wrap text on, and set the distance from text.

You can click the Picture Position tab in this box to set advanced layout options.

-          Back in the main Format Picture dialog, our next tab is Picture. You can use this dialog to crop your picture, change its colour style, and adjust brightness and contrast. You can also compress pictures or reset the picture using the buttons at the bottom.

-          Tab number four, Text Box, is unavailable unless you’re formatting that object. We’ll look at this tab later on.

-          The Web tab allows you to type text that will appear if your picture cannot load. This is only applicable if the page is being displayed on the Internet, so it can be a useful option if you are creating a Web site. This text may also be used if your document is read by a user who has accessibility options (like the narrator) turned on.

Once you’re done configuring each tab, click the OK button to save your changes or click Cancel to discard them. You will then return to your document.
