Lesson 1.4: Customizing Toolbars and Menus

   

 

 

There are some toolbars that are not displayed in the right-click menu or the View – Toolbars list. You must enable these toolbars by clicking the Tools menu, clicking Customize, and clicking the Toolbars tab. Here’s what that window looks like:

 

 

Just like the View or right-click menus, you can enable a toolbar by checking it or hide it by unchecking it. Many of these toolbars contain commands that you have never heard of, so don’t worry about the actual commands. Just focus on the general idea of the toolbar.

 

Here’s a list of the toolbars you will see only in this list:

 

3D Settings

  • 3-D On or Off
  • Tilt Up, Down, Left, or Right
  • Depth
  • Direction
  • Lighting
  • Surface
  • 3-D Colour

Diagram toolbar

  • Insert Shapes (specific to diagrams)
  • Move your text Back or Forward one shape
  • Reverse Diagram
  • Change the Layout
  • AutoFormat
  • Change the type of the diagram
  • Set text wrapping
  • (These options may be different or missing depending on what type of diagram you are using.)

Drawing Canvas

  • Fit the drawing to contents
  • Expand drawing to contents
  • Scale drawing
  • Set text wrapping options
  •  

Extended Formatting

(adds commands to the formatting toolbar)

  • Highlighting
  • Emphasis Mark
  • Double strikethrough
  • Phonetic guide
  • Combine characters
  • Enclose characters
  • Single, 1.5, or double line spacing
  • Columns

The Function Key Display

  • Shows a list of all ten function keys and what each does.

Japanese Greetings toolbar

  • Japanese Greeting
  • Japanese Opening
  • Japanese Closing

Menu Bar

  • Turn on or off the Menu Bar (File, Edit, View, Insert, etc.) with this checkbox.

Microsoft toolbar

(Contains links to various applications. Note that all icons are present regardless of whether or not the application is actually installed.)

  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • Access
  • FoxPro
  • Project
  • Schedule+
  • Publisher

Organizational Charts

  • Insert a shape (specific to organizational charts)
  • Change the layout of your chart
  • Select a chart type or element
  • Change the style of your chart
  • Change text wrapping
  • Change zoom levels

Shadow Settings

  • Shadow On/Off
  • Nudge Shadow Up, Down, Left, or Right
  • Shadow Colour

Shortcut Menus

(Can only be enabled when the Customize dialog box is open)

  • Customize the Text, Table and Draw shortcut menus.

 

You can see how many of these toolbars are very specific and would only be used in a limited situation. Depending on what you use Word for, you may find them useful!
