SECTION 1
Lesson 1.4: Customizing Toolbars and Menus

Did you know that you can add menus as well as toolbars to your Word layout? Microsoft Office Word 2003 has two menus that are built-in but are not shown by default. The first menu, Font, will show a menu list of fonts if you add it to the menu bar. The second menu, Work, can be customized to show a list of frequently-used documents.

Let’s look at how to add these items. First, click the Tools menu and then click Customize. Then, click the Commands tab. In the Categories section of the Commands tab, scroll down to Built-In Menus. Now, in the Commands section you will see a list of your built-in menus.

Scroll to the bottom of that list and you will see Font and Work. Now, you can take either of those items and drag and drop them onto the menu bar in any spot you want:

You can remove menu items with the Customize dialog box open by dragging them off the screen, like this:

You can even remove default menu items, like Format or Window.

Unlike modifying toolbars, when you make changes to menus, they are immediately reflected in all open windows. The changes will also be saved for the next time you open Word.
