Although you can type in the body of the header or footer, you can also
insert dynamic text fields. Dynamic text fields are fields that
automatically update to save you work. They will have a grey box around
them if you click on them in the header or footer.

For
example, page numbers are an automatic field. If you insert the dynamic
page number field, Word will keep your page numbers updated as your
document changes, which saves you from typing the number in each page
and updating them as you change your document.
Like
static text, dynamic text will be replicated throughout the headers and
footers in your document when it is inserted.
Let’s
take a look at the different types of dynamic text entries.

Remember that AutoText isn’t perfect in all situations. For example, if
you want to insert the date you finished your project into your header
or footer, you should type that date into one header or footer. Using
the Date button on the Header and Footer toolbar will update the date to
the current one (the date the document is being viewed), and the Created
On date will display the date the document was created, not completed.
As
well, you can edit, delete, and format AutoText just like you would
regular text. Remember that if you delete the text that has a grey
background, it won’t update anymore. This won’t be a concern for some
fields that you won’t change, like author, but it is important to
remember for fields like page numbers, dates, and times.
